Bad News from a Recent Study: Wrongful Deaths in Car Crashes Are on the Rise

One death due to a car accident is too many. No one wants to lose a loved one due to the negligence or recklessness of another person. Unfortunately, car accidents happen all the time – and some of them are fatal. Worse, the number of fatal car accidents is on the rise. This is despite constantly improving safety measures in new vehicles and ever tougher drunk driving laws.

Why are these numbers going up? And what can be done to stop them? Read on to learn more. If you’ve been injured in a car accident, or a loved one has lost their life, then please call Law Offices of Fernando D. Vargas at 909-982-0707 for your free case evaluation. We may be able to help you but it all starts with your phone call.

The latest data is for 2015

The study discussed above is from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, otherwise known as the NHTSA. Their most recent figures are for the 2015 year. Their stats show that about 96 people died every single day from a car accident, truck accident, motorcycle accident, or other vehicle accident. Of course, no every accident is fatal. The same study showed that more than 6,700 people suffer some kind of injury due to a similar accident every day.

How much have the numbers gone up?

The study compared the numbers for 2015 with those of the year before, 2014. In 2015 there were a total of 35,092 car accident related fatalities. When compared to 2014, this was a 7.2% increase. That’s a significant increase no matter how you look at it. In fact, it’s actually the largest increase in the last 50 years.

Not everyone is at equal risk

These numbers are already frightening but they get even more so when you consider that car accidents are the leading causes of death for people who are 11 years old, and people between the ages of 16 and 24. Driving or being a passenger in a car are things that most people do almost every day. Yet we’re finding that it’s an increasingly likely way for a person to die.
