The Total Number of Motorcycles – and Motorcycle Deaths – is Higher Than in Most States

There were more than 800,000 registered motorcycles in California as of 2019. This makes us easily the state with the most registered motorcycles. Unfortunately, we are also the state with the second-highest rate of motorcycle deaths. The only state to “beat” us in this category is Florida.

More Accidents Occur in Urban Areas than in Rural Areas

It is often the case that people think of motorcycles as being ridden more in rural areas than in urban areas. This may be the case, but there are more fatal motorcycle accidents in urban areas than rural. In fact, 57% of fatal motorcycle accidents occur in urban areas compared to just 43% that occur in rural areas.

Most Two-Vehicle Accidents Were Impacted in the Front

Of all the motorcycle accidents that involved two-vehicle traffic crashes – meaning, not accidents in which the motorcycle was the only vehicle involved – nearly two-thirds impacted the front. Does this number surprise you? It should not – it has been steady for decades.

One in Three Fatal Motorcycle Accidents Involve Speeding

33% of motorcycle accidents involve speeding. In some cases, this is the motorcycle rider speeding. In others, it is the other vehicles that are speeding. Of course, it is sometimes both parties that are speeding.

Fatalities Are on the Rise

The bad news is that the number of fatal motorcycle accidents has been rising year after year. On average, over the last decade the number of fatal accidents has gone up by about 10% each year. About one in four motorcycle accidents involve someone using alcohol and, despite stricter helmet laws, more and more fatal motorcycle accidents involve people lacking basic safety gear – including helmets.
