The Cost of Treating Burns in California May Shock You At Law Offices of Fernando D. Vargas, we’ve been working on personal injury cases for many years. Part of that work involves bringing in experts to determine the total cost of rehabilitation and recovery for each injury our clients experience. Without doubt, some of the most difficult injures to put a price on are burn injuries. That said, the largest jury awards tend to come with burn cases.

Burns injuries are costing more than ever before

Many people don’t realize that residential fires are increasing year after year. For example, the most recent stats from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention show that someone died, on average, every 153 minutes from a fire. Every half hour, someone was injured. Damage to property exceed $6 billion last year, and fire and burn injuries cost another $7.5 billion.

Add to that the $3.3 billion spent on non-hospital burns, the $3.1 billion spent on fatal fires and burns, and the $1.1 billion spent on hospitalization, and you can see that this is indeed a serious issue that must be addressed.

The costs of burns on an individual level

Of course, the stats for the entire country don’t do much good for an individual. One thing we can say for sure: Burn injuries are one of the most costly injuries to treat. There isn’t any data to back this up, but it’s common sense to know that the skin grafts, specialized care, and long hospital stays can cost upwards of $200,000 on their own. Then when you consider the cost of possibly life-long rehabilitation, that number goes up exponentially.

In the vent that a person has burns over more than one-third of their body, then the cost just for their initial hospital stay can be as much as $250,000 – and that doesn’t even include the physicians’ fees. Add to that the numerous reconstructive surgeries that will likely be required, plus rehabilitation, plus repeatedly being admitted to the hospital. As you can imagine, this can easily be as much as $1 million or more – and that’s without taking pain and suffering into account.
