A Los Angeles family files a wrongful death case

The case in question involves a 21-year-old man who was swimming in a pool and subsequently drowned. His family has now filed a wrongful death lawsuit. The accident happened back in the summer of 2015 and there’s one more thing that makes it notable: The person’s property on which the accident occurred is none other than the actress Demi Moore.

Demi Moore wasn’t present when the drowning occurred

This tragedy happened while a party was in the middle of being held, but Demi Moore wasn’t present. Instead, the party was being thrown by the house manager of her estate. In fact, that house manager is named as a defendant in the wrongful death lawsuit in question. It’s worth noting that Demi Moore is not named in the lawsuit.

Why is the house manager being held accountable?

There isn’t always someone responsible for a drowning accident, so what makes this one special? According to the filing, the man who died told people at the party that he couldn’t swim right after he got to the part. However, that party had plenty of alcohol, it had walkways that were hard to see and walk down, and it had a pool that wasn’t lit and that didn’t have the deep end clearly marked.

The backyard was also not well lit, and had rocks and other things that caused a tripping hazard. At this point, it’s not clear how much the parents of the deceased have asked for in the lawsuit, though potentially they could be requesting both economic and non-economic damages.

The sad truth is that this can happen to any property owner

The sad truth about drowning accidents is that they happen all too often. All it takes is one person tripping and the result could be a life-changing injury – or even death. As a result, anyone who owns property in California is required by law to keep hazards off their property and the laws for those with pools are even more significant. If they don’t do so, the owner and / or their property manager can be held responsible for the accident.
